SpaMedica teams with Johnsons Workwear for stylish new uniforms
ABOUT SPAMEDICA
Currently the UK’s largest provider of NHS cataract surgery, SpaMedica set out to become a leader in the eye health field after opening its first hospital in 2008. By 2010, the company had opened a network of eye hospitals across the northwest and expanded to offer additional NHS services, including YAG laser capsulotomy and treatment for age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Now, SpaMedica has established itself as the leading independent provider of NHS cataract surgery and runs a network of over 60 highly rated eye hospitals across the UK.
When SpaMedica first approached us, they required a workwear rental and laundry service for 58 of their locations across the country. Their primary need was for professional, comfortable uniforms that were also thermally disinfected to guarantee the safety of both employees and patients.
As SpaMedica was new to the rental workwear process, we were particularly eager to demonstrate the many advantages of opting for a managed service.
THE CHALLENGE
At Johnsons Workwear, we assembled a dedicated team to gain a deep understanding of SpaMedica's specific requirements, with a strong focus on infection control standards and supplier responsiveness. Our team conducted a thorough evaluation of their needs and guided them through a comprehensive selection process to ensure we could not only meet but exceed their expectations in every aspect of the service.
As SpaMedica was new to the rental workwear process, we were particularly eager to demonstrate the many advantages of opting for a managed service. One of the key benefits we highlighted was the convenience of having a fully managed solution that guarantees fresh, clean, and hygienic uniforms ready for employees at all times. This hassle-free approach eliminates the need for capital outlay and means employees don’t have to spend valuable time washing and maintaining their uniforms themselves .
It also ensures that all workwear remains consistently fit for purpose, meeting stringent safety and hygiene standards, which is critical in a healthcare environment. By offering a streamlined service, we were able to show how a managed rental solution could significantly reduce operational stress and allow SpaMedica to focus on what they do best—providing exceptional patient care.
THE APPROACH
As part of this collaborative effort, we invited Senior Facilities Manager Steven Watson to tour our Leeds facility, providing him with a first hand look at our operations and processes. A critical aspect of this engagement was demonstrating our rigorous infection control procedures, a key concern for SpaMedica. We were proud to highlight that all our plants hold the prestigious EN 14065 certification, ensuring the highest standards of hygiene and safety are maintained throughout our services.
We held regular meetings with the hospital managers throughout the process to ensure that the transition to the new workwear service was as seamless as possible. These meetings allowed us to address any queries, fine-tune logistics, and keep everyone aligned on the progress. A key part of this transition involved measuring each employee for their new uniforms, ensuring a perfect fit for comfort and professionalism. Over the course of a few months, we meticulously coordinated the implementation of all aspects of the service, from uniform fittings to the set-up of the collection and delivery process. By the end of the procedure, the contract was fully executed, and the new service was up and running smoothly across all sites.
Thank you to the team at Johnsons Workwear for their hard work and dedication in ensuring we had a great onboarding process and continued service excellence.

THE RESULT
Steve was impressed with the dedication from the implementation team, commenting, “The new scrubs will most certainly improve our brand identity, as our teams will proudly wear their SpaMedica embroidered navy scrubs, that are innovative in design and comfortable. “This process has been managed by a Johnsons Workwear National Account team that have worked alongside our hospital managers and have a critical path to installation that is shared on a Microsoft Teams channel, so we all have transparency of where we are. Thank you to the team at Johnsons Workwear for their hard work and dedication in ensuring we had a great onboarding process and continued service excellence.”
