Road Safety Week 2018

Today flags the start of Road Safety Week around the UK and Johnsons Workwear is taking the opportunity to help boost the campaign and to create awareness of this year’s theme of Bike Smart.

Ian Greatrex, who is our National Transport Manager, says: “This is an ideal time to stress the huge importance that we place on health and safety on the road, not just for our own drivers and employees but also for the public too. Driving correctly and safely while doing your job, or as you travel to and from work, is important for individuals, their families, our customers, the community and the environment.”

Being Bike Smart is crucial as more and more people choose bicycles and motorcycles to travel for health and environmental reasons. However, according to Department for Transport statistics, more than a third of people killed or seriously injured on UK roads are those traveling by bike. The Road Safety Week campaign explains that cyclists and motorcyclists are among the most vulnerable road users in the UK, with more than 100 riders injured every day in needless, preventable crashes.

Our business continues to build its focus on driver safety throughout the year, having successfully introduced Quartix technology for drivers in 2017. This web-based system collects data on rates of acceleration and braking, rating each driver with a performance-based score. The data helps to highlight any potential concerns over driver safety, while the Driving Style Monitoring feature evaluates speed, hard braking and rapid acceleration. Individual logins allow drivers to monitor their own data regularly and league tables enable teams to compare themselves against their colleagues to further incentivise their engagement with safe driving. We’re pleased to say that some 96 per cent are rated above the required score.

To support safe driving and to increase awareness of surroundings, vehicles, bikes, motorcycles and people, we are investing in vehicles with reversing cameras, and large vehicles with electronic braking and lane departure warning systems.

Remember that motorcyclists are 38 times more likely to be killed in a crash than car occupants per mile ridden. Together, let’s try and change this.
